This project was done during my internship for Dream. The objectives for this project, was to create a poster that would then be sent out to tenants notifying them of the event to take place.
PROCESS
During the year, Dream likes to put on events to encourage tenant activity and team building, as well as strengthen relationships. This year they had decided to rent mini donut trucks and needed a notice letter to fit the theme. I wanted to take inspiration from the Calgary Stampede as it's an integral part of the summer, and the rustic theme surrounding it. That reason is what prompted me to use washed-out wood flooring for the background. It helped set the tone and bring pieces of the stampede into the poster, from the wooden posts erected outside Nashville North, to the wooden stables.
When considering the event had to do with Mini Donuts, I wanted to playfully incorporate them into the poster. I grabbed some photos I had taken and started messing around with how they would look spread out on the page. After noticing the pictured version didn’t look right against the background, I played around with the image trace options, making them into a more abstract vector version of themselves.
From there, I wanted to bring in some of Dream’s brand colours (such as blue, orange, and green) into the poster, but due to the darker tones, it created a hard readability aspect. That being said, they also had black and white options for their branding, which offered a better contrast to the piece. I ended up using the white version of their brand logo and matching the same colour for the text on the page as it created the most contrast and helped tie into the lighter tones in the Mini Donuts.
As for the logo, I wanted it to be subtle on the page but still able to stand out on its own, so I put it in the corner where the curve of the Mini Donuts leads the eye. And since I was using Dream’s font, GT Walsheim, I played around with different font weights and lines to help break up the text and create sections and hierarchy throughout the small space.
