This project started by creating five separate 3D models and later turned into a major project rework. The 3D models had to reflect something that exists, or that could exist in real life.
PROCESS
I was thrilled to dip my hand back into 3D objects and renders after touching on Inventor back in high school. I started thinking about the work I could do with the tools we had learned so far and thought about relevant items. I played chess with my best friend often and thought it would be a great place to start. I decided to go with the pawn to ensure a refined composition.
I grabbed some reference photos and then started with the base, building the circular foundation and building my way up using a loft tool. I then proceeded to build out the sphere to add to the composition. Now that the pawn was constructed, I worked to add an ambience to the chess board and lighting to finish the piece.
For the rework, found some other reference photos that matched the style of the pawn I had previously done. I started with Rook, following the same process as the pawn and using the tools I had such as an indent cut and an array of rectangles to cut out the crown section for the top. The Queen followed in a similar fashion, using a cone cutout instead, while the King's cross was done using a symmetry option. The bases of the rest of the pieces came together the same way, with slight differences to each due to the nature of the piece.
After the pieces were done, I went to work on a base to hold them on and finish off the chess game. This used the same tactics as the pieces, just a slightly different format and shape.
